There are currently two vacancies within Central Government departments for Strategic Lawyers to join on a contract basis. Initially working remotely, the roles will be based in Central London when the office re-opens. The contract duration will be between 5-7 months, with the scope to extend.

One role is sitting within a team providing advice in the areas of social care, health care professional regulation and pensions, and the other in the areas of medical ethics and public health (including tobacco), and possibly EU Exits matters relating to these two areas of work.

Duties will include, but are not limited to;

*Providing advice to clients considering public law issues arising out of the departments' proposals or activities.

*Meeting agreed timetables for providing advice or documents.

*Producing written work in plain English and which is legally sound and clear.

*Providing advice which addresses policy aims and takes account of wider client department and Government policy.

*Providing constructive advice which develops solutions to legal problems.

*Drafting secondary legislation or instructing more experienced drafters.

*Providing litigation support on high profile judicial reviews.

Knowledge & skills required:

*Sound understanding of public law.

*Reliable legal judgment and appreciation of legal risk.

*The ability to think strategically and creatively, see legal issues in their wider context and advise accordingly.

*Sound analysis, using secure legal research to produce timely and fit for purpose advice.

*The ability to communicate advice effectively both in writing and orally.

*An understanding of the role of lawyers in government.

*Knowledge of EU law.

*The ability to rapidly to get up to speed with new area of law.

*Confidence to engage with clients, Ministers etc - you will be expected build and maintain effective business relationships relevant to your work and contribute to the smooth running of the team and department.
