About us

The NHS holds a data set on health and care which is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. Over the last thirty years, an increasing number of health records have been digitised. Personal health data is extremely sensitive, and its handling is rightly subject to extensive data protection and privacy legislation and Health and Social Care Acts.

We have seen an explosion in technology products and services for processing large quantities of data in increasingly sophisticated ways, enabling the generation of transformational new insights from this data. Huge, complex and extremely rich new data sets are emerging from the fields of genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and microbiomics. Whilst advanced analytics, machine learning and AI will all have an increasing role to play in managing the system's data, much value is also derived from rich data visualisation and deployment of business intelligence systems to enable detailed, real-time MI to be delivered to users.

About the opportunity

There can be few roles more exciting than Chief Data Officer of the NHS in 2018. We are looking for an extraordinary individual, as befits the incredible potential of the role. The role is demanding in terms of technical skill, legal and regulatory competence, commercial savvy and delivery of robust and efficient service delivery but offers the potential to have a transformative effect on the delivery of health and care in the UK, with international influence.

The CDO will be accountable for building a world class Data, Insight and Statistics Directorate, delivering the benefits of data, information and technology to patients, commissioners, care providers and research bodies whilst ensuring that every citizen's data is protected.

About you

You will be recognised as a national and international authority in the use of data to drive insights. You will have broad ranging analytical experience, including demonstrable experience of managing processes and delivering results in a research, statistical or information-rich environment. Your technical knowledge and understanding of the design and operation of data platforms and systems will be supported by a comprehensive understanding of the legal and political context of information management systems and data protection.
