Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

At Badenoch & Clark we recognise that our obligations to society, the economy and the environment go beyond the statutory duties placed upon us.

Through our CSR strategy we aim to:

  • Have our CSR goals adopted as part of Badenoch & Clark’s wider culture and any strategy surrounding it.
  • Have developed a strong environmental strategy and to aim for a large scale reduction in our carbon footprint.
  • Increase employee engagement by widening the scope of our volunteering projects, to work in partnership with organisations to improve the community in which we live in.
  • Increase our donations of charitable giving nationwide.
  • Be recognised as being a leader in our field for our corporate social responsibility programme.

Environment

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues facing society. As an office based company, DEFRA identifies our two environmental Key Performance Indicators as waste and green house gas emissions.

To reduce waste our head office has removed all individual bins and we now recycle paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, metal, toners, electrical equipment and clothes. The removal of individual bins saw our recycling increase substantially and we are looking to encourage recycling across our network of offices as intrinsic behaviour.

During 2009, we recycled 7,552 kilograms of paper waste. This is an 81% increase on the previous year and equates to 10,570 kg of C02 saved - that's 91 trees.

To reduce our direct greenhouse gas emissions we have:

  • Introduced lighting controls in head office to reduce our energy consumption
  • Educated our staff to turn off their PCs and other office equipment.
  • Reduced deliveries around our network of offices to cut down unnecessary delivery emissions
  • Promoted more environmentally friendly alternatives to support our office function through better use of equipment, reducing consumables, promoting recycled products and promoting the principles of a paperless office.

As part of our CSR initiative, we have been working with Green Routes to enhance the local environment to the benefit of the community and we offset the carbon we use covering paper with an innovative system we call Treebate. This Treebate scheme plants trees on our behalf and is replanting lost forests in South East England.

Supply Chain

Where appropriate, we positively discriminate in favour of suppliers holding the ISO 14001 environmental accreditation. This standard improves the sustainability of the manufacturing processes carried out by our suppliers.

We use vegetable-based inks and Era papers for all print collateral. Era papers are 50% recycled content from post consumer waste. The remaining 50% is FSC approved content from sustainable sources. We have created a personal offset scheme with James McNaughton, our paper supplier, called ‘Treebate’. James McNaughton plant one tree for every 200kg of CO2 used in the production of our paper supplies.

When purchasing office furniture we source materials manufactured using raw materials from sustainable sources by FSC accredited suppliers.

People

A safe working environment

We take the health and safety of our employees very seriously and ensure a safe working environment in the following ways:

  • Reviewing our policy annually (we are CHAS registered)
  • Communicating our policy and health & safety guidelines in our company handbook - a copy is given to all new employees and the most recent version is available on our company intranet
  • Detailing best practice for a safe working environment through our health & safety manual
  • Carrying out risk assessments annually to review the office working conditions
  • Employing DSE (Display screen equipment) usage consultants to assess and advise our employees in order to avoid RSI and other muscular disorders

Employee wellness

We encourage employee wellness by:

  • Making private health available to all employees
  • Supporting an active work-life balance for all of our employees – company sporting initiatives include pilates run by one of our Directors, a netball team, football teams and a squash league as well as informal jogging meetings
  • Negotiating company discounts at local fitness clubs including yoga, pilates and aerobics classes
  • Making flexible working available to employees for the accommodation of family commitments
  • Providing childcare vouchers
  • Giving the opportunity to employees to take an eight week sabbatical after three years of employment – this is a welcome career break to many who appreciate the security of the job they will return to

Giving

Financial donations

In 2009 we raised over £10,000 through various fundraising initiatives including, but not limited to:

  • Weekly raffles for the flowers in our reception – all proceeds are donated to a charity nominated by our employees.
  • Dress-down Friday – a monthly opportunity to donate to the charity nominated that month by employees

Giving in kind

  • All excess equipment is donated to local charities and small businesses, supporting out “reduce, reuse, recycle” ethos
  • All our employees are entitled to “one day to make a difference”. This ensures that everyone in the company, should they wish to, has the opportunity to volunteer their time and expertise to company backed projects.
  • 90 professional job seekers were supported by our scheme through the Job Centre Plus, helping 60% of them to get back into work:

On behalf of Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth Jobcentreplus I would like to say how much we appreciate and value Badenoch & Clark's involvement in this initiative … From our point of view our new partnership is very valuable to us, especially as we now have this ongoing opportunity for our jobseekers. It is proving highly popular and may I say thank you for your commitment to this, along with providing your time and expertise in helping our customers back to work. ”
