Communication Officer

A fantastic job opportunity has arisen for a Communication Officer to join one of our largest Local Authority clients in a temporary assignment for 6 months initially (with every possibility of an extension should the successful candidate perform well).

Based in South East London, this is a full time role (36 hours per week, Monday to Friday).
Main responsibilities:
*Meet with service managers and other colleagues to discuss their communication needs and use your knowledge and expertise to advise on the most cost effective communication solutions.

*Develop productive working relationships with internal and external colleagues with ability to effectively inform, explain and persuade to resolve problems and reduce conflict, as appropriate.

*Help promote good practice across all communications, by advising colleagues to ensure that materials follow the Lewisham brand, style and writing guidelines.

*Provide advice to service managers and other colleagues who contact the communications team for support to resolve communication issues.

Develop, project manage and implement integrated communications plans

*Contribute to the development and delivery of the Council's communication strategy, ensuring that service information and corporate programmes are positively and effectively communicated to a wide range of audiences.

*Plan, implement and evaluate integrated communications plans to support key service and corporate priorities.

*Manage your workload effectively, balancing priority projects as agreed with the Head of Communications

*Project manage communications work, allocating tasks to and overseeing the delivery of work by, the communications assistant, production and creative staff, and external suppliers as appropriate.

*Manage project work to ensure it is carried out to agreed budgets and delivers value for money

*Use the analysis of market research, user behaviour, media coverage, and other feedback to inform and develop future communications activity.

Coordinate communications activity

*Brief and work closely with service managers and other colleagues to produce information about services that can be used on the website, in email marketing, social media and other channels as appropriate.

*Manage and coordinate, or support as appropriate, the communication of a range of internal and external events e.g. People's Day, Carers' Week, Young Mayor launch.

*Actively seek out and pursue opportunities for positive publicity using online and offline media.

*Ensure that all work is guided by the relevant legislation and policy governing local government publicity and communications best practice.

*Ensure the communications and work management systems of the team are consistently used.

Develop, write and devise creative campaign concepts for internal and external communications across all channels

*Produce factually accurate, engaging written copy for communications materials, media materials and online sources, using plain English and following the Council's style guide

*Proofread and subedit copy on screen and hard copy proofs, checking for accuracy, readability and compliance with the Council's style guide.

*Work with colleagues and service managers, as appropriate, to devise creative campaign concepts for a range of materials

*Ensure the Council's key communications tools, such as corporate publications, the Council's website, email marketing and social media are regularly used in the delivery of campaigns and provision of service information as appropriate.

Manage people

*Take responsibility for the day-to-day management of any apprentice or work experience placement in the communications office, checking volume and quality of work, and supporting their professional development.

Media relations

* Handle enquiries from journalists about council services, policies and activities as required.
